His funeral drew not only full military honors but considerably more brass than the funeral of a field-grade officer. Among mourners were General Alexander Haig, the Army Vice Chief of Staff, and Lieutenant General Robert E. Coffin, who had been his Commanding Officer when he served in Italy before his Vietnam tour.

As part of Central Michigan University’s William B. Nolde Lecture Series, The William B. Nolde Lecture Series seeks to promote an understanding of the role of the United States Armed Forces in the life and history of the United States and to recognize the tie between military science and the broader disciplines within the university. The lectures serve as a stimulus to intellectual activity for future leaders both in the military and across the campus and community. The Nolde lectures are hosted and organized by the Department of Military Science and Leadership during the fall and spring semesters.
